The AmCham Saudi Arabia’s Professional Services Committee hosted a panel discussion focused on “Managing Risk on Mega Projects in Saudi Arabia” on Monday, May 6th at Marriott Hotel in the Diplomatic Quarter in Riyadh. The panel delved into the complexities of managing risk in the phases of mega projects in the region through a case study approach.
The event commenced with welcome remarks by Kassem Younes, Chair of AmCham Professional Services Committee who highlighted a transformation of Saudi Arabia to become the global hub for mega projects, followed by remarks from Andrew Billard , Senior Commercial Counselor at U.S. Embassy Riyadh emphasizing a strong relationship between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.
The panel discussion moderated by Aseel Zimmo, Managing Partner at First Link, featured distinguished industry leaders including Bryan Harvey, Vice President, Head of KSA Giga Projects and Middle East Growth at Jacobs; Mufeed Saleh, Program Director at Bechtel; Amani Khalifa, Partner and Head of the Saudi Disputes Practice at Freshfields; and Mahmoud AlAli, Head of Property and Engineering at Chubb Arabia Cooperative.
The experts discussed various types of risks inherent in mega projects stages, including technical challenges, logistics, government role, approvals, complexity of connectivity and supply chain management process. They underscored the importance of design stage, explained the rules of mega projects, importance of understanding risk early and the difference between mega and normal projects.
Furthermore, the panel drew attention to the significance of establishing clear communication channels and implementing effective tools to address and mitigate risks proactively. The discussion also touched upon the role of insurance, legal disputes, and compliance measures in managing risk effectively on mega projects.
The evening concluded with engaging Q&A session providing valuable insights and practical strategies for professionals involved in mega projects in Saudi Arabia followed by the networking opportunity.
